El Calafate is a small town in Patagonia, Argentina, situated in the southern border of Lake Argentino, in the southwest part of the Santa Cruz Province. It is an important tourist destination as the hub to visit different parts of the Los Glaciares National Park, including the Perito Moreno Glacier (one of the most visited in the world) and the Cerro Chaltén and Cerro Torre.
Its name is derived from a little bush with yellow flowers and dark blue berries that is very common in Patagonia: the calafate (Berberis buxifolia); the word comes from the word "calafate", which is Spanish for "caulk".

In the area of national park excursions are made to the glaciers, including Perito Moreno stands out, the biggest attraction of it, the Big Ice mini trekking and on the same glacier, browsing through the channels of Lake Argentino, visiting Onelli Bay Upsala glaciers and immense, Spegazzini, Onelli and dry among others.
In the vicinity of Lake Argentino organize a variety of activities, highlighting the visits to leisure travelers, 4x4 off road trips in the hills and Huyliche Frias, horseback rides of varying lengths, trips to the lagoon ecological reserve and hiking in Nimez Rock Lake.
Another advantage of its location are Full Day tours in 4x4 vehicles, to sites of outstanding beauty, crossing the Patagonian plateau and back on the same day, the most visited are: El Chalten, Torres del Paine and Monte León.

Adventure Tourism
Mountain lovers have the chance to trek, climb or practice mountaineering on the Torre and Fitz Roy Hills. Other activities include ascents to the ice-fields, rafting, canoeing, horseback ridings, archeological expeditions, overland excursions, and photography safaris.

Sport Fishing
Santa Cruz’s many lakes and rivers offer a full range of fishing choices – from sea fishing to salmonid.

History
The history of El Calafate began in the first decades of the twentieth century. Originally, it was simply a sheltering place for wool traders. The town was officially founded in 1927 by the government of Argentina to promote settlement, but it was the creation of nearby Perito Moreno National Park in 1937 that sparked growth and the building of better road access.

1 - EL CALAFATE - Perito Moreno Glacier 4 Days – 3 Nights

Day 1
El Calafate Airport Arrival.

Perito Moreno Glacier full day activity
Departing from El Calafate you travel 80 Km by bus and you will arrive to the balconies, where you can enjoy different panoramic views of the Perito Moreno Glacier, into the Los Glaciares National Park , for about 4 hours.
If you want to have lunch, you can visit the restaurant 1 Km far away from the balconies, or the snack bar next to the balconies, or you can take your own food and enjoy it admiring the landscape.

The tour starts at the port called "Under the Shadow" (7 km. Before the glacier viewpoint). There are boats to cross Lake Rico, reaching the opposite shore after 20 minutes by boat overlooking the south wall of the Perito Moreno glacier.
After landing access to the shelter where guides give details about the trip. Then began a walk along the lake shore about 20 minutes to the glacier. At the edge of the ice the guides put the crampons to participants who are instructed in the basics of glacier hiking. The groups consist of up to 20 people each. The path on the glacier, is made in just under 2 hours and during the course of it we can appreciate a variety of formations typical of glaciers such as: cracks, crevasses, drains, small lagoons, deep blue and the unique feeling of visit one of the most stunning natural beauty of the world etc .- The hike is moderate. The ice surface on which you walk is irregular, but firm and safe. The guides provide information on the flora, fauna and general glaciology of the region as well as the unique characteristics of the Perito Moreno glacier. At the end of the ride, we return to the shelter through the lush Andean forest.
All services are conducted daily and has continued attention bilingual mountain guides (AAGM-EPGAM-UIAGM) in the glacier. In one-way shipping the boat back significantly on the glacier wall to get another perspective.

Optional activities

a - Navigation All Glaciers full day Tour
The bus departs from El Calafate and after 45 minutes arrives to the port of Punta Bandera. Travelers board the catamaran and sail toward Upsala Glacier. This is the largest continental glacier with walls reaching 80 mts/240 feet. Later on the boat reaches the Onelli Glacier where travelers unboard at nearby Bahia Onelli to have lunch at the local restaurant. This area holds a beautiful native forest and Laguna Onelli, a natural pond where glaciers Onelli, Bolado and Agassi converge. The pond is full of small icebergs.
The ship then sails to Spegazzini glacier, the highest in the park with 135 mts/405 feet and 25 kmts long. From here the ship heads back to Punta Bandera where travelers take the buses back to El Calafate.

b –Viedma Light
We depart by car to Túnel Bay, located 8 km away from Chaltén. The tour consits in a short navegatioon on Viedma Lake, where is possible to watch the icebergs coming from the glacier  until we get in front of it.The ship get near the ice wall, surrounding it. This tour let us to watch the impresive shapes and colors of the glacier. It’ s ideal for a photo safari.

Gourmet Glaciers Experience
Transfer from the hotels in El Calafate to Punta Bandera. Boarding at 8:30 / 9:00 am. At La Soledad private port. (Bahia Tranquila, Punta Bandera).
The route begins north-westerly direction, going to Punta Avellaneda and Boca del Diablo. After two hours of sailing, the succession of floes of various colors and shapes announces the proximity of the Upsala Glacier. We stop in front of the barrier of icebergs that momentarily prevents Upsala Canal entry, and if weather conditions allow admire the Upsala Glacier in the distance.
We continue cruising Lake Argentino, and take the Spegazzini Channel to reach the glacier Spegazzini. The navigation allows powerful approach to the glacier that has walls front of 80 to 135 meters above the lake. Lunch is served in front of this wonderful landscape. At evening the Cruise Leal arrives at Puesto de las Vacas, extremely quiet in the Canal Spegazzini, where silence their engines to allow passengers to share an interesting walk coordinated by our guides.
Then we start the return to be reaching to the port Private La Soledad at 18:00 / 18:30 hs.
